Piero Salatino is Professor of Chemical Engineering at Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, dei Materiali e della Produzione Industriale of Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. He holds a MSc in Chemical Engineering, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering received from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in 1987. He is currently Chairman of the School of Polytechnic and Basic Sciences of Università di Napoli Federico II, after holding the Chair of the Faculty of Engineering and the Direction of the Combustion Research Institute of the National Research Council of Italy. Piero Salatino is an active researcher in the fields of chemical reaction engineering, combustion, powder and particle processing, bioprocess engineering since 1982. Selected scientific appointments include membership of editorial boards of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Powder Technology, Fuel Processing Technology and membership of the historical Accademia Pontaniana.


Dr. T.S. Sudarshan is the Founder of the Surface Modification Technologies series of conferences and is currently the President and CEO of Materials Modification, Inc. He has a PhD from Virginia Tech and has been responsible for driving the company’s technological leadership in the development of next generation materials, processes and techniques for the past 32 years. He has been a passionate entrepreneur and provided employment to over 400 individuals, provided the first jobs for over 180 students, served on over 10 thesis committees for M,S. and Ph.D’s. Dr Sudarshan has served on the National Materials Advisory Board, Ohio Third Frontier Committees, ASM International Board, Committees for the Army, NSF, NIH and DoE. He has over 180 papers, editor of two journals – Materials and Manufacturing Processes and Surface Engineering, coeditor of 34 books, holder of 30 patents, winner of two R and D 100 awards, Fellow of ASM International, Fellow of IFHTSE, Fellow of IMMM, UK, and Distinguished Alumni of IITM. He has been responsible for heading the development of 18 products and has worked in difficult to solve problems in the area of nanotechnology and surface engineering. He has also been on the Advisory Board of ATI, South Carolina and several other companies as a consultant.


Jordi Sort leads the “Group of Smart Nanoengineered Materials, Nanomechanics and Nanomagnetism (Gnm3)” at UAB, Spain, which focuses its research activities on the synthesis of a wide variety of functional materials (electrodeposited films, lithographed structures, porous materials, bulk metallic glasses, nanocomposites) and the study of their structural, mechanical, magnetic and thermal properties. He worked at the SPINTEC Laboratory (Grenoble), at Argonne National Laboratory (USA), at the Grenoble High Magnetic Fields Laboratory and at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Prof. Sort Prof. Sort’s research activity was awarded by the Catalan Physical Society, by the Spanish Royal Physical Society and the Federation of Materials Societies (FEMS Prize in Materials Science & Technology, 2015). Prof. Sort has supervised 13 PhD Theses and is currently co-supervising the work of 5 more PhD students. Prof. Sort has published around 300 articles that have received approximately 7000 citations (h=40) and has managed 25 national/international research projects. In particular, Prof. Jordi Sort was awarded a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council. His project, entitled “Merging Nanoporous Materials with Energy-Efficient Spintronics (SPIN-PORICS)”, aims to integrate engineered nanoporous materials into novel spintronic applications.


Edoardo Bemporad is Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Dipartimento di Ingegneria of Università Roma TRE. He holds a MSc in Nuclear Engineering, and a PhD in Materials Engineering received from Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza 1995. He is currently Coordinator of the PhD Course in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and leads the Materials Science and Technology group and coordinates the Interdepartmental Laboratory for Electron Microscopy ( at Roma TRE. At present, his interests lie in structured and nanostructured coatings, especially for wear resistance, corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation where he gives his contribution in the design, production and characterization, especially on surface mechanical response. With an h-index of 24 and about 1850 citations, he is author of more than 150 full papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including more than 115 with surveyed bibliometric indicators, more than 50 papers presented at international venues (several as invited), 5 book chapters and 3 patents. Selected appointments include membership of the advisory board of the Italian Interuniversity Consortium on Materials Science and Technology and consultant for the Italian Ministry of Research and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development.
